Is Gentamicin Elution Influenced by the Timing of Antibiotic Addition to the Bone Cement? An In Vitro Study on Articulating Hip Spacers

Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) is a challenging complication after joint replacements, and cement spacers are standard treatment in two-stage revision surgery. This experimental vitro study aimed to evaluate the elution properties of different gentamicin formulations from commercially available intraoperative molded hip spacers. The compared prepared with premixed antibiotic bone cement, powder added during preparation, stored for two months, an additional antibiotic. results showed that timing addition influenced elution, immediate resulting higher levels than Spacers preparation exhibited Furthermore, adding vancomycin significantly increased elution. These findings suggest optimizing method may enhance effectiveness PJI. However, further research needed validate these explore their clinical implications.
